When I first decided to throw a Shrek-themed summer party, I wasn’t totally sure what to expect. Would people dress up? Would the food be a hit? Would anyone actually want to come hang out in a DIY swamp? Turns out, yes, yes, and absolutely yes. The party was an ogre-sized success with a few hiccups along the way that I’ll definitely learn from next time. Here’s how it went, from the green punch to my wish list for the next one!

Ogre-Sized Wins and Crowd Favorites

The Food Was a Whole Fairy Tale
We leaned hard into theme-friendly snacks, and let me tell you—Donkey would’ve been proud. The waffle bar was hands-down the crowd favorite (because what else would Donkey want?). We had a spread of toppings: whipped cream, berries, syrup, chocolate chips, and even green sprinkles for that ogre-approved finish.

We also set up a hot dog bar with every topping you can think of—chopped onions, relish, mustard, shredded cheese, even jalapeños for those who wanted their dog with some Dragon fire. And for dessert? The iconic dirt cake, complete with gummy worms crawling out like they’d just come from Shrek’s garden. Kids were obsessed.

Dressing Up Made the Whole Party
I wasn’t sure if people would commit to the ogre-core vibe, but as soon as a few guests showed up in Shrek t-shirts and green face paint, the mood totally shifted. Suddenly we were in a full-on fairy tale land—Donkeys, Fionas, and even one Lord Farquaad roamed my backyard.

We handed out small prizes (think: budget-friendly Shrek shirts from Walmart and green sunglasses) for the best costumes, and it honestly made everyone want to go bigger. People love being rewarded for dressing ridiculous, who knew?
Family-Friendly Fun (With a Splash of Adult Chaos)
The party hit that sweet spot—fun for the kids, but with enough winks and nods for the grownups to enjoy too. Just a word of advice: clearly label your punch bowls (or create adorable signage for your cooler as you see above). We had an adult “swamp punch” with a bit of a kick (lime sherbet and pineapple juice with a splash of something extra), and a kid-safe version which I decided to add blue food coloring to so we could differentiate which punch was which easily.
Instant Photos + Scrapbook = Pure Magic
One of my favorite moments from the night was the instant photo station. We took goofy pics of guests throughout the evening and added them to a little scrapbook we passed around. By the end of the night, it was filled with doodles, notes, and hilarious Shrek-worthy captions. Everyone got a kick out of flipping through it, and it’s something I’ll keep forever.

The Swampy Struggles: What I’d Do Differently
Decor Was… a Lot
I love a good DIY, but trying to pull together a full Shrek swamp from scratch? That took more energy than I had. The “Beware Ogre” signs and faux vines looked cute, but next time I’m giving myself a break and ordering more pre-made stuff from Amazon or hitting up Dollar Tree a week in advance. Less hot glue burns, more relaxing.
More Games = Less Chaos
We had a few solid activities—Karaoke using YouTube and inflatable microphones, “Pin the Tail on Donkey”—but the kids had energy and time to spare. A few asked why we couldn’t just do a full “Shrek” movie marathon, and honestly, they were onto something. If parents are okay with extended screen time, that’s a solid plan for keeping little ones busy. Next time, I’ll prep more scavenger hunt clues and maybe add in a DIY slime station to really lean into the messiness of a Shrek party.
My Wishlist for the Next Shrek Party
Now that I’ve thrown one swamp-tacular bash, I’ve got a running list of things I’d love to add next time. These are the decorations, games, and extras that would make everything easier and more magical—plus a few over-the-top additions I’m totally manifesting.
Here’s what’s on my Shrek Party Wishlist:

Shrek Character Masks or Costume Kits
Let guests transform into their favorite characters with simple costume kits. Some of my friends went all out with their costumes but for anyone who came with out it would have been great to have some of these on hand:

Ready-Made Decor Kits
No more cutting out ogre ears at midnight! Next time, I’m grabbing a full Shrek-themed party kit with banners, balloons (another kid activity, perhaps?), and tableware. Bonus points if it includes swamp signs and character cutouts. Here are some items I’m keeping in mind:
- “Get Out Of My Swamp” Sign With Balloons
- Green, Gold, and Brown Crepe Paper
- Green Fringe Curtain
- Ivy Garlands

Fairy Tale Backdrop for Photos
The scrapbook was such a hit, so next time I want a cute backdrop—think castle, swamp, or “Shrek’s outhouse”—for all our goofy pictures. OK, I actually want all of these:

Swamp Slime Station for the Kids
This one’s a DIY or store-bought option, but I’d love to add a slime-making station. All you need is green food coloring, glue, saline solution, baking soda, and a few mix-ins like glitter or plastic bugs. It’s messy, but a total win for keeping kids busy.
Final Thoughts from the Swamp
Was it chaotic? Yes. Did we fully commit to the theme? Also yes. And that’s what made it so much fun. A Shrek-themed party is the kind of thing people remember—not because it’s fancy, but because it’s fun. Green food, silly costumes, fairy tale games, and a playlist that starts with “All Star” and ends with “I’m a Believer”? That’s a recipe for summer magic.
If you’re thinking about throwing one yourself, do it. Just maybe give yourself a few extra days for setup… and make sure Donkey’s waffles are front and center.
